2017 Update- We are currently experimenting with a heritage cross boar on our Berkshire sows. The first pigs from this cross will be our 2017 Fall butcher hogs. I expect great things from this new line of pigs and believe they will be even better than our purebred berks.
Ulrich Family Farm is proud to offer our pasture raised berkshire pork direct to local customers. Berkshire pork is famous for its perfect combination of juciness, flavor and tenderness.A heritage breed known for for its deep red meat, Berkshire pork is a favorite of gourmet chefs around the world. The Berkshire breed has kept the traditional pork flavor and marbling common to pigs before confinement farming turned pork into "the other white meat".
Here at Ulrich Family Farm we raise pigs the a little differently. Our pigs are born here on the farm from our own small herd. We don't use farrowing crates or pens. Our moms are allowed to farrow out in the pasture or in their choice of small shelters. Sows naturally want to find a private place to build a nest from grass, dirt and sticks. We offer them all of these things and in turn they are calmer, better mothers, and they allow us to handle their pigs. Handling piglets from birth gives us an intimate relationship with each animal. Our pigs gentle nature and trust of us, allows for gentle stress free handling, feeding, and trailering. A pig that has had a happy life and walks freely and calmly into the holding pen at the processors is the goal of our operation.
Our pigs spend their whole lives outside rotating through 20 acres of all natural grass and clover pasture and woods. They are free to root, dig, frolic, sunbathe, and wallow in the mud. We feed custom mix of local NON-GMO grains and milk from fellow KS farmers. We feed NO SOY, we use no antibiotics, medications or hormones in our meat animals. However, we will not let an animal suffer when antibiotics or other medication is required. We simply remove them from the butcher group after treatment. Depending on the season they also get apples, pumpkins, alfalfa and garden produce. We grow our pigs out a little slower allowing 8 months or more to reach market weight of 300lbs. The best flavor and marbling sets in after 200lbs. A slow grown pasture raised pig achieves a beautiful deep red pork with an unbeatable flavor.
We have our pigs processed at Paradise Locker Meats in Trimble, MO. Paradise Locker is family owned, certified humane and animal welfare approved. They have won multiple awards at BBQ competitions nationwide. They do a fantastic job and offer excellent smoked products as well as bratwurst and sausages.
